Albania Sets Sights on EU Membership by 2030: Prime Minister Inspires Expatriates in Greece
Prime Minister Edi Rama passionately announced that Albania has set its sights on achieving European Union membership by 2030 to an enthusiastic crowd of around 2,000 supporters in Thessaloniki, Greece, on Sunday. Speaking to a hall filled with Albanian expatriates, Rama promised significant changes on the horizon—not just for Albania’s future in Europe but also for Albanian citizens abroad.
Historic Voting Rights for Albanian Expatriates and Improved Greek-Albanian Relations
In a historic move, Rama pledged that starting with the upcoming general elections in the spring of 2025, Albanian citizens living abroad will finally have the opportunity to vote by mail. This milestone aims to increase civic participation and empower the Albanian diaspora.
The lively event unfolded with an atmosphere of pride and optimism. Albanian flags waved high, and the crowd was treated to performances from beloved musicians, adding a sense of celebration. Rama used the opportunity to highlight Albania’s strides toward EU membership, reiterating that Albania’s future “Aligns closely with.” with Europe.
Rama also addressed recent tensions between Albania and Greece, precisely the case of Fredi Beleri, an ethnic Greek Albanian politician who faced prison for alleged electoral corruption.
Despite past friction over Beleri’s case, Rama was keen to downplay animosity, stating that diplomatic ties with Greece remain “excellent.” By focusing on a united future, he encouraged the crowd to look beyond the political differences that had previously strained relations between the two countries.
Outside the venue, there were minor signs of dissent; around 20-25, nationalist protesters held banners opposing Rama’s visit. However, the protest slightly contrasted with the overwhelming support inside, where the Prime Minister’s call for unity and progress echoed strongly among his audience.
With this bold vision of Albania’s future in Europe and increased political participation for Albanians abroad, the nation’s drive toward integration reflects Rama’s commitment to embedding Albania within the European fabric, signalling hope and forward momentum for both the country and its people as Albania sets sights on EU membership by 2030.
